What is a Release Clause in a Football Contract?

Writer's picture: PBS FootballPBS Football

FIFA licensed football agent from PBS Football agency says, "So a release clause is pretty much what it says on the tin. It's a figure that's put into the contract whereby if a club makes an offer of that amount, then it basically automatically releases the player from the contract. And the club that holds the contract can't stand in the way of the player going.

Generally clubs will agree to a release clause being the value of the contract, basically the value of what they're investing in the player. The release clause will form part of the addendum along with clean sheet/goal bonuses etc".
