What is an 'Option' in a Football Contract?

Writer's picture: PBS FootballPBS Football

FIFA licensed agent Tom Peace from PBS Football agency says, "A lot of clubs do what's called a one plus one. So they'll, they'll have the option for the club to trigger the second year. From the player's side that isn't a bad thing because I feel that the club are only going to trigger the second year if the player's done well for them. So you could argue that If they trigger the second year, it means that the player has done well, therefore the player should generally be in a good place.

If they don't trigger the second year, then obviously the player is free to go. And that's when the agent would come in and try to source them new opportunities".
